EQUINE INFLUENZA: VACCINATION PROTOCOLS – 10^th January 2008

General:

• Vaccine is now available for horses against Equine Influenza.

• The issue of the vaccine has to be approved by the DPIE on a case by case basis.

• Pacific Vetcare is licenced to administer the vaccine.

Recommendation:

• Pacific Vetcare does not recommend vaccination of horses in the green zone

• We recommend rigid biosecurity measures around your horses to prevent contact with the disease.

• We believe that NSW is well on the way to eradication of Equine Influenza by July 2008.

• We recommend vaccination of those horses that need to be moved in or out of the zone or travelling to competitions where a number of horses may be gathering.

Vaccination Protocol:

• Initial course – two vaccinations 4 weeks apart followed by a third vaccination 4 months later. (Cost between $110 and $125 per vaccination)

• Then a booster every six months.

• Any horses not microchipped will need a microchip (Cost $47.50)

• There will be a vaccine handling charge by the suppliers of $25.00 per order per client.

Information Required:

• Reason for Vaccination – movement, competition, breeding, sale.

• Owners name, address, telephone, mobile, email, fax.

• Location of horse

• Details of horse – name, breed, colour, age, sex and microchip number. We can supply microchip number if not microchipped.

• Name of event/sale, Reason for permanent move, other

• Property name and address of destination
